Chinese Cultural Revolution

The Chinese Cultural Revolution Module was developed by EASC for educators to infuse East Asian content into the classroom. While designed for the high school social studies classroom, these modules could be used in any classroom. Students engaging in this module will obtain an understanding of what China’s Cultural Revolution was, why it occurred, and its long-term consequences. The module also asks students to think critically about how such a political event, which disrupted everyday life in China, could occur.  Module one covers the origins of the Cultural Revolution. While the Cultural Revolution took place between 1966 and 1976, its origins date back to the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The module stresses two competing visions for what “New” China would look like. Module two covers the time between the Great Leap Forward (1958-1961) and the first half of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1972). Module 3 covers the conclusion of the Cultural Revolution and the political consequences of the movement. The final years of the Cultural Revolution (1973-1976) were less intense than the first three years of the revolution. Each PowerPoint has an accompanying primary source document, accompanying videos on EASC’s Youtube Channel are also included with each module.
