Dance
5190 Dances of China 3
This class will dive into two or three dance forms associated with China. Possible forms include: classical
Chinese dance, Dai minority dance, Mongolian dance, and Uyghur dance. These dance forms are informed by
a range of time frames and geographical cultural spheres including Central Asian, South East Asian and
Chinese Opera movement. Students will get to move in very different ways gaining an embodied
understanding of inter-Asian connectivity and an understanding of China that goes beyond Han-centric
discourse. The class will be taught by Alissa Elegant. She studied Chinese dance in the diaspora (San Francisco area) and
in China. She spent a year studying dance at Minzu University in Being, with experts in Chinese minority
dance. The professors usually taught the dance forms of their own minority groups and regularly conducted
ethnographic fieldwork as part of their pedagogical and artistic practices.

"The History of Race in East Asia": This new course focuses on the influence of race in East Asia. The course will examine the origins of the concept, its interactions with science and medicine, and most important, its impact on the 19th and 20th century politics of China, Japan, and Korea. The goal of this course is for each student to develop a strong understanding of East Asian history and the global roots of race. By placing East Asia at its center, this course presents a non-U.S.-centric narrative on race that aims to undermine the troubling persistence of this unscientific idea.
