IKS hosts Second Midwest Korean Speech Contest
The Institute for Korean Studies, a constituent unit of the East Asian Studies Center, hosted the Second Midwest Korean Speech Contest on April 17, 2021. Organized by the Midwest Association of Teachers of Korean (MATK) and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chicago, the contest is open to college students who are taking or have taken a Korean language course at a college in the Midwest area. This year the contest was held via Zoom, where 49 learners from 19 universities in the Midwest competed.
Three students from The Ohio State University taking Korean courses in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures received awards for their speeches:
- Franchesca Ulloa (pictured below left) received the Highest Standing Award in the Advanced Level competition.
- Shelby Gogal (pictured below center) received an Excellent Award in the Intermediate Level competition.
- Stephie Choe (pictured below right) received an Honorable Mention in the Beginner Level competition.
