On February 14^th, 2025, the East Asian Studies Center and Professor Mineharu Nakayama hosted Professor Hilary Holbrow for a presentation "The Future is Foreign: Women and Immigrants in Corporate Japan," the title of her forthcoming book. Professor Holbrow is an assistant professor of Japanese Politics and Society at Indiana University. She is currently doing survey and survey-adjacent studies to research the ongoing gender inequalities in white collar workplaces across Japan. Her findings revealed copious data supporting the assertion that women in the Japanese workforce (no matter the nationality) struggle in the workplace hierarchy. However, her study also showed a twist on the public perception of Japan’s “xenophobic” mindset.
