Conference Held in Honor of Richard Torrence

East Asian Studies Center

On Saturday, April 13, the “Centrality Reimagined: Geographical, Linguistic, and Temporal Space in East Asian Literary and Cultural Expression” conference was held in honor of Richard Torrance, a beloved Japanese professor at The Ohio State University who passed away in 2023. Past students and colleagues of Prof. Torrance were in attendance, both as speakers and observers. Presenters spoke on topics ranging from Osaka Puck magazine collections at The Ohio State University to Leo Tolstoy’s influence on Japanese literature. The gathering was a chance for attendees to reflect on Richard Torrence’s impact on the Japanese studies community.
