2012 JET Memorial Invitation Program: Application Process Begins!!

"JET-MIP was created in 2011 to honor two beloved American English teachers who lost their lives during the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan. In 2012, we will continue this program, which provides 32 high school students the opportunity to visit Japan and learn about Japanese language and culture. Our hope is that this opportunity will motivate American youth to eventually participate in programs such as the JET program to enhance relationships between Japan and the United States and build bridges of friendship for our future generations. There are some new requirements for the registration process this year including the National Japanese Exam that has a registration deadline of January 31st, 2012.

Greetings teachers!
We hope you, and your students, had a delicious and relaxing holiday weekend. We would like to remind you that the deadline for early bird registration for the 2012 National Japan Bowl is this Friday! If a team applies before the early bird registration deadline, December 2nd, the $55 registration fee for the teacher will be waived. We're excited by all the schools we've already heard from-- this is sure to be a great year. The Japan Bowl will be held April 12th and 13th, 2012 in the National 4-H Center near Washington DC, celebrating its 20th anniversary. Check out our official website for registration forms and general information about the competition. Remember to send your payment using only one check if possible.

Nengajo Contest by NCJLT and AATJ

Having your students make NENGAJOU is one of the fun cultural activities of the school year and it is almost time to introduce this cultural Practice and Product to our students. For several years NCJLT (and from 2012 onwards AATJ) has sponsored a national contest for excellent designs.Please note that if you are interested in participating, you must have paid your membership dues to NCJLT for 2011. Dues for 2012 will soon be payable by online registration to AATJ which will be continuing the activities of NCJLT and be the national organization or the promotion of Japanese language teaching.

2012 Invitation Program for Japanese American Students
Please find attached a description and application form for the 2012 Invitation Program for Japanese American Students by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The program provides five high school students of Japanese American heritage with a ten-day trip to Japan, including an orientation in San Francisco, to gain further understanding of Japanese culture and people. See the description page for more information and criteria. The completed application is due to the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit by November 30th and pre-departure orientation begins in San Francisco on March 9th.

Program Description
Teach English in Japan through the Suzuka English Fellow (SEF) Program
Deadline: December 20, 2011.
Program: The SEF participants serve as Assistant English Teachers in a local government organization (the Suzuka Board of Education) as well as local kindergartens, elementary and junior high schools.
Requirements: Applicant needs to have or expect to have a BA/BS by July 2012, hold US citizenship and be a native speaker of English.

Rakugo Performance!
Showto, a Japanese Rakugo Performer, visited Ohio again this year from Oct 3rd to Oct 17th.. He showed his performances and conducted workshops at the University of Findlay, Jacobs Primary School, Benjamin Logan Middle School/High School, Glenwood Middle School, Cory Rawson Elementary School, Bowsher High School, Findlay High School, and Van Buren Elementary Shcool. The Japan Foundation, The Hancock County Community Foundation and The University of Findlay have contributed funds to host Showto from Japan.

JET Memorial Invitation Program for U.S. High School Students
Japan Foundation is pleased to inform you that our Headquarter has developed a special new program titled "JET Memorial Invitation Program for U.S. High School Students." Since most of the expenses will be covered by the Japan Foundation, it will be a great opportunity for Japanese learners (11th or 12th graders as of 5/31/2011) to deepen their knowledge of Japanese language and culture IN JAPAN! The application deadline is coming up very soon (5/13/2011), so I would very much appreciate it if you could forward the following program announcement (along with the attached documents) to your Kyoshi-kai members as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for your time and cooperation!
Note: Please note that, as you can see at the "Eligibility" in the attached "Program Announcement," one of the requirements for the eligibility is "Application must be a member of Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS) or have equivalent academic score (Japanese GPA: 3.5 or higher; all-subject GPA: 3.0 or higher)."

Charity Performance Show on Saturday, May 7th 7 p.m.
at the historic Holland Theatre in Bellefontaine, OH
International Friendship Center in Bellefontaine, Logan County Chamber of Commerce, Hi lliker YMCA and Logan County Landmark Preservation, Inc are hosting Jim Greer and the Mac-O-Chee valley Folks and other groups performance show. All proceeds to be donated to the Red Cross and UNICEF for School in Box kits for the Japanese children. This event is sponsored by Reliant Mechanical. Benefit Concert for Japan relief on Fryday, May 13th 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Fremont, OH
Hope for Japan will have a band, 50/50 raffle, silent auction etc to collect donations for Japan relief.
It's $10 to get in. All donations will be sent to community chest of Japan.

$2,867 Collected for Earthquake and Tsunami Relief for Japan!
The students at Ben Logan High School, Middle School, Elementary School, and Tokyo Grill, the locan Japanese restaurant in Bellefontaine, collected money for Earthquake and Tsunami Relief from April 4th to April 18th. All the donations were sent to Japa through American Red Cross. The members of Japanese National Honor Society created several posters, and decided to start collecting money before Spring Break. For High School, any student or staff member who is donating more than a dollar will pick a origami-made small heart and write his/her name. The small hearts with names are posted on the large poster to show their appriciation to his/her participation to this event. The JNHS members and the students in Mr. Yamamoto's Japanese I and III classes made thousands of small Origami hearts for this Relief. The students collected $2867.21 in total, and they handed the check to the members of Logan County Chapter of the American Red Cross at Benjamin Logan Middle School on the 20th of April.

Inviting Tea Ceremony People from Columbus!
Benjamin Logan High School/Middle School invited Ms. Osada and two other Japanese ladies from Columbus to demonstrate authentic Tea Ceremony Show on Dec 2nd, 2010. The students in Japanese classes, Social Study, and some Middle School students enjoy watching and tasting green tea and sweets. (They prefer avoiding extremely hot or cold seasons as they wear Kimono.)

Rakugo and Katsuben, Traditional Japanese Performance Show!
The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, The University of Findlay, The Ohio State University, and Western Michigan University hosted Rakugo and Katsuben performers from Japan. Showto-san (Rakugo) and Asou Yata-san & Koyata-san performed at Japanese Saturday School of Toledo, the University of Findlay, Western Michigan University, Ben Logan High School, Bowsher High School, and Ohio State University from Sep 25th to Oct 1st. Thank you so much for Kawamura-sensei and Yonekura-san!
