2012: Centennial Celebration of the Gift of Trees

  • Background: In 2012, the Institute for Japanese Studies at The Ohio State University was pleased to work with the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the Japan-America Society of Central Ohio, and many other organizations to receive 20 Cherry Trees as part of the Centennial Celebration of the Gift of Trees from the government of Japan. This project allowed us to reflect on the history and significance of Japan-US friendship exchanges, including those relating to cherry trees, and was an excellent opportunity to think about the next 100 years of our friendship.
