Dublin Jerome High School Room C222 (8300 Hyland Croy Rd., Dublin)

Danielle Krug-sensei and Iya Nemastil-sensei will present a comprehensive curriculum guide for high school Japanese designed to maximize language acquisition through target-language instruction while fostering strong literacy development. Grounded in the principles of backward design, the session will walk participants through a thematic, proficiency-oriented curriculum that builds progressively from novice to advanced levels. Participants will explore how key vocabulary, grammar in context, Can-Do statements, and authentic performance assessments can be integrated and aligned with Standards-Based Grading (SBG) practices.

2:30 pm-4:00 pm: Discussion

This interactive discussion session will bring together Japanese language educators to examine current opportunities and challenges in secondary Japanese language education. We will engage in dialogue on issues affecting high school Japanese programs and will have opportunities to learn about and connect with colleagues from programs across Ohio, strengthening professional networks and fostering relationships that extend beyond the conference.

Through these conversations, we will try to identify opportunities for ongoing collaboration, resource sharing, and collective advocacy to support and strengthen Japanese language education throughout Ohio.

Both lunch and workshop are free of charge thanks to the generous support from Japan Foundation in Los Angeles and Ohio State East Asian Studies Center.

Registration:. Please register using the online form by October 31.

Co-sponsors: This event is presented by the Ohio Association of Teachers of Japanese (OATJ) and sponsored in part by the Japan Foundation in Los Angeles and the East Asian Studies Center at The Ohio State University.
