The East Asian Studies Center presents:
A North Korean Film Screening:
The Flower Girl (1972) and Comrade Kim Goes Flying (2012)
The East Asian Studies Center at the Ohio State University is pleased to host a double-feature of historic North Korean films. Korean food will be provided. Registration is required, and closes 7/28.
The Flower Girl (1972) is based on an opera allegedly written by former North Korean President Kim Il Sung. The story is set in the Japanese colonial period, and follows the struggles of a Korean family against an exploitative landlord. It was the first North Korean movie to ever win an international award, and was the first (and remains one of the only) DPRK films to attract international attention and acclaim.
Comrade Kim Goes Flying (2012) is a romantic comedy about a young female coal miner in North Korea who aspires to become a trapeze artist. It was the first DPRK film to be co-produced with western filmmakers, although it is shot entirely within Pyongyang. It is regarded as North Korea’s first “girl power” film, and among the first DPRK films without a propagandistic focus.
