Session 1: Supporting Students with Learning Disabilities in the Inclusive Japanese Classroom

During the past 20 years, awareness of and support for students with a wide variety of learning disabilities has dramatically expanded in the United States, making Japanese classes available to many who in the past would not have been able to participate in these courses. Laws impacting how we support these students have changed dramatically as well. In this session, we will take a look at some of the most common learning disabilities, how they impact students' work in Japanese learning, and how we can support them. We will also review students' legal rights to academic support and our role in that process.
Session 2: Designing a Kanji Curriculum Using Radicals
(1:45 pm - 3:15 pm (EST))
There are several options available for selecting and sequencing the kanji that we introduce to learners, arranged with varying goals. In this session, we will compare kanji lists published by three sources, consider the goals of each, and discuss how to create a long-term kanji curriculum based on your program's specific needs. A logical sequence built on students' understanding of the ways in which kanji are composed will support learners in developing skills that allow them to acquire new kanji more easily in a way that is not tied too closely to any one textbook.
