"Conversational Cantonese for Mandarin Speakers" is back, this time as a formal, new course! This course is for students who would like to learn to converse in Cantonese. It is open to both advanced learners and native speakers of Mandarin Chinese.

The course focuses on developing students’ speaking and listening skills to enable them to function in everyday, Cantonese-speaking environments. Classes are conducted in Cantonese with grading based on daily performance.

Credits: 3 credit hours (open to both graduate and undergraduate students)
Time:  M-W-F  4:10 - 5:05 p.m.
Place: Hayes Hall, Room 0012  (108 N. Oval Mall)
Instructors: Tsz-Him Tsui, Yutian Tan, and Litong Chen
Faculty supervisor:  Professor Marjorie K.M. Chan (Dept. of E. Asian Langs. & Lits.)
Prerequisite:  Chinese 2102, 2141 or 2151, or permission of instructor. Closed to native speakers of standard Cantonese, or students with 2 or more years of standard Cantonese in high school or equivalent.

The Spring 2015 offering of Chinese 4301 is made possible with support from the East Asian Studies Center’s Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

NOTE: Chinese 4301 is the permanent course name and number for this course. The earlier course number that was used -- namely, Chinese 4194 -- was a temporary Group Studies course number. As of 2 December 2014, the new, permanent course is: Chinese 4301. Conversational Cantonese for Mandarin Speakers I. This is the first of a two-course series: Chinese 4301 and Chinese 4302. Both Chinese 4301 and 4302 may be used for the "Advanced Courses" category in the Chinese Major Program, or as "Electives" in the Chinese Minor Program.
