In high school in Switzerland, she developed a passion for Chinese literature, particularly poetry, drama, and fiction, on account of the profound influence that China had exerted on Japanese and German literature respectively. She subsequently studied at universities in Tokyo, Zurich and Beijing before receiving her M.A. and Ph.D. in Chinese Literature from the University of California, Berkeley. After brief teaching stints at Bowdoin College and the University of California, Berkeley, she joined the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at The Ohio State University, where she has taught courses and published books and articles on Chinese literature, print culture, translation studies, and women's studies. Her current research revolves around editing a guided anthology entitled How To Read Chinese Drama, while also completing a book manuscript about a nearly forgotten British printer-cum-sinologist active in translating Chinese literature in the turbulent early nineteenth century.  While serving as Director of the East Asian Studies Center (2005-2013) and of the Institute for Chinese Studies (2005-2010), she previously taught a NCTA seminar in 2011.  She lives with her husband and son in Upper Arlington.
