The Institute for Chinese Studies and Office of International Affairs presents "The 'Handover' of Hong Kong - Life Before and After the Transition"
Abstract:
Steve Barclay, director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, will visit Ohio State and share his unique experiences of life in Hong Kong and discuss the country’s economic, social and political transition from British colonial rule to the People’s Republic of China. Barclay has worked for the Hong Kong government since 1979 and will offer insight as to what life was like before and after the change. The presentation is Monday, August 24 at 2 p.m. in the Tanya R. Rutner Room, Ohio Union.
Bio:
In his role as director, Barclay is responsible for promoting and strengthening the business, trade and cultural ties between Hong Kong and 31 eastern states in the United States. Prior to his appointment in August 2014, he served as director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sidney for four years and was a public sector reform advocate and internal management consultant in the government’s Efficiency Unit for nearly a decade.
Barclay has served in a wide variety of posts with policy responsibilities including consumer protection, intellectual property, housing and environmental protection. He has served as a district officer in Hong Kong and also as Hong Kong’s economic and commercial representative in Brussels. Barclay has twice been responsible for drafting the Chief Executive’s Policy Address.
