Famous TKM figures have been used as main characters in Korean TV dramas that have been recorded as mega hits. The story of royal doctor ‘Heo Joon’ (Hur Jun 64 episodes, 1999-2000) recorded 64% peak viewership rate, and the medical nurse ‘Dae-Jang-Geum’ (54 episodes, 2003-2004) recorded 55.5% peak viewership rate. TKM has a unique tradition in respect to medical theories and clinical skills compared to China, Japan and other Asian nations. Currently, TKM is practiced by 20,000 certified clinicians, and accounts for 5-10% of the National Health Insurance program. This lecture will provide a general introduction to TKM including major medical theories and clinical skills, history and the educational system of contemporary TKM as a part of the Korean healthcare system.Bio: Dr. Han Chae is a Medical Doctor of Korean medicine, and currently is a Professor of the School of Korean Medicine, Pusan National University (Busan, Korea). He was a medical officer for three years at ROK Army Special Forces after completing his medical board. He was a researcher at the Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine (Daejeon, Korea), Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA), and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Cleveland, OH), and visiting scholar at Toyama University (Toyama, Japan) and Washington University in St. Louis (St. Louis, MO).The biopsychology of TKM is at the center of his research interest. Professor Chae is a prominent researcher of Sasang typology which is a personalized medical practice based on Confucianism and traditional East-Asian medicine. He has published many articles analyzing biopsychological domains of Sasang typology and Yin-Yang. He is also interested in the mechanism and management of academic stress from the point of temperament and character where temperament determines biopsychological susceptibility and character governs the recognition of academic stress and modulation of psychopathological susceptibility.
