China Event: Aku Wuwu "Aku Wuwu Poetry Evening"

Add to Calendar 2014-09-24 19:00:00 2014-09-24 21:00:00 China Event: Aku Wuwu "Aku Wuwu Poetry Evening" GREALL will be hosting the "Aku Wuwu Poetry Evening" event at 7:00-9:00pm on September 24, Wednesday, for Prof. Luo Qingchun (Aku Wuwu), a well-known poet of the Nuosu branch of the Yi ethnic group in southwestern China. Prof. Luo Qingchun (Aku Wuwu) from the Southwest University for Nationalities, Chengdu, China is a well-known poet of the Nuosu branch of the Yi ethnic group. Almost unique among the contemporary Yi poets, he writes in both Chinese and Nuosu Yi language. In this talk, he will respond to various questions about his experience growing up in the Liangshan mountains of southern Sichuan province, the craft of writing and performing poetry, the significance of mother tongue literature and local knowledge, and the contemporary ethnic poetry gatherings held Chengdu tea houses and other venues. This talk will be conducted primarily in Chinese, though English translation will be available. Snacks and beverages will be provided.This event will be a good opportunity to ask Prof. Luo questions about ethnic minority literature and culture in China. For students who want to do field work in China, this talk may provide valuable information and resources. Prof. Luo also happens to be a friend of our very own Prof. Mark Bender. Prof. Bender has translated a lot of his poems into English, and published the poetry collection Tiger Traces. You can download the poster of this event here.
