Study Abroad Programs

The OSU Office of International Education (OIE) enables students to experience East Asia while earning graded, academic credit.   A number of opportunities are available, including both unique programs taught by OSU faculty and academic exchange programs with overseas universities.


Art and Culture in China

Dates:

Four weeks (summer second term 2005)

Location:

Shanghai and Beijing, People's Republic of China

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program fee of $1,400 (est.)

Eligibility:

Open to currently enrolled undergraduates with sophomore standing and graduate students

Art and Culture in China is an innovative and intensive four-week program that introduces students to issues of the arts and culture in China. The primary objective of this program is to give a small group of students (20-25) the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese daily life and culture while also earning credit for courses in art history (including a GEC class), film studies, and independent study projects arranged through other OSU programs. In addition, students are introduced to Chinese history, society, and language. Field trips to museums, film studios, artists' studios, and places of cultural and historical importance are an integral part of the program.   Students of ALL majors are welcome to apply. The diversity of students from various disciplines as well as students from other campuses is an important aspect of this program.

China: Minority Cultures on the Southwest Frontiers

Dates:

Two weeks following spring quarter (offered in 2006)

Location:

People's Republic of China

Cost:

OSU spring quarter tuition plus Study Abroad Program fee of $2,950 (est.)

Eligibility:

Open to currently enrolled students of all majors who have completed a minimum of two full-time quarters of enrollment at OSU at the time of application and have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above

This program focuses on the folklore of select ethnic minority groups of southwest China, in Yunnan province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Emphasis will be on gaining perspective on cultural processes in terms of oral performance, folk dance, material culture, and tradition-oriented conceptual art. The program will introduce students to a variety of contexts in which to understand and appreciate important aspects of ethnic minority oral and material cultures in a changing world. All instruction is in English.

Engineering, Modern and Ancient in China

Dates:

June 10 - June 25, 2005

Location:

Shanghai, People's Republic of China

Cost:

OSU tuition plus OIE Program Fee of $2,700 (est.)

Eligibility:

Open to Engineering majors who have completed a minimum of two full-time quarters of enrollment at OSU at the time of application and have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above

This program will challenge engineering students to explore environmental, human, and ethical issues involved in planning and executing large engineering projects, with special emphasis on the Three Gorges Dam project ($25 billion investment in energy generation and flood control, as well as relocation of 1.3 million people). The program also includes a hands-on mobile robot project, in cooperation with students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.   Students will visit important cultural venues in Shanghai (China's largest city, its largest port, and its largest industrial base) as well as in Wuhan, (seventh largest city in China; the important comprehensive industrial, financial, commercial, educational and scientific research center in the central part of China). While in Wuhan, students will visit Huazhong University of Science and Technology to meet with Chinese students and exchange views on contemporary engineering issues. Before the trip, students will be expected to attend at least two one-hour orientation and information meetings on the OSU campus.

Intensive Chinese Language Study in Shanghai, PRC

Dates:

June 18 - August 26, 2005

Location:

Shanghai, People's Republic of China

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program Fee of $1,500 (est.)

Eligibility:

Open to OSU students of all majors who can demonstrate a high intermediate to advanced level of Chinese (typically after successful completion of three years of college Chinese). OSU students should have successfully completed Chinese 509 or 510 and should have a minimum GPA of 2.75 or above. Acceptance to the program will be determined on the basis of academic record, two letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and personal/telephone interview.

This program is a high intermediate-advanced level program that offers intensive Chinese language instruction in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture. Particular emphasis is placed on developing appropriate cultural behavior; ability to perform effectively in frequently encountered cultural contexts, and interpersonal communication skills. The program utilizes a community-based learning approach that requires participants to interact with locals in the Shanghai area in meaningful ways. Ninety percent of all instruction is in Mandarin Chinese.

International Christian University

Dates:

Academic year (September - June)

Location:

Mitaka (a suburb of Tokyo), Japan

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program fee of $300 per quarter.   Students pay travel and living expenses (est. $1,300 per month).

Eligibility:

Open to full-time undergraduate students of junior standing at OSU, with a 3.0 minimum GPA, who have had at least two years (or equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction by the time the program commences.

The OSU-International Christian University (ICU) exchange program allows for the reciprocal exchange of two undergraduate students from each institution for one academic year, September to June. This exchange program gives the participants from OSU the opportunity to experience Japanese culture and study the Japanese language in a supportive environment.

Intermediate Chinese Language Study in Qingdao, PRC

Eligibility:

This program is open to OSU students of all majors who have completed Chinese 103 and hold an overall GPA of 2.75 or better.

This program is an intermediate level program that offers intensive Chinese language instruction in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture. Particular emphasis is placed on developing appropriate cultural behavior; ability to perform effectively in frequently encountered cultural contexts, and interpersonal communication skills. The program utilizes a community-based learning approach that required participants to interact with locals in the Qingdao area in meaningful ways. Ninety percent of all instruction is in Mandarin Chinese.

International Exchange Program: Hokkaido University (HUSTEP Program)

Dates:

Academic year (end of September to end of August)

Location:

Sapporo, Japan

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program Fee of $300 per quarter. Students pay travel and living expenses (est. $1,100 per month)

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduates of junior standing, with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, who have completed at least one year of college-level Japanese.

This is an international exchange program based on an agreement between The Ohio State University and Hokkaido University. One exchange student is selected each year to participate in this program. There is an English-only track available, offering courses in Japanese language, history and culture. However, students who have facility in the Japanese language may be allowed to take other courses offered in Japanese. Facilities on campus include a library, an international student center, student health service, computer center, cafeterias and stores.

International Exchange Program: Waseda University

Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduates of junior standing, with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, who have completed at least two years of college-level Japanese

This international exchange program is based on an agreement between The Ohio State University and Waseda University in Japan. One to three exchange students are selected each year to participate in this program. Students may register for any course offered in the International Division Program. Students are placed in small language classes according to their level, while courses in Japanese and Asian culture, society, politics, and economics are conducted in English.

International Exchange Program: Yonsei University

Dates:

Academic year (September to June)

Location:

Seoul, Korea

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program Fee of $300 per quarter. Students pay travel and living expenses (est. $900 per month)

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduate students with at least junior standing and a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Students must have completed at least one year of study at OSU before beginning the exchange program.

Yonsei University's International Undergraduate Program offers sixty courses taught in English in Korean and East-Asian Society, culture, art, philosophy, history, politics, international relations, economics, business, and Korean language. Special student activities include a Korean film series (with subtitles), Taekwondo sessions, and classes in ceramics, bamboo flute, folk music, calligraphy and painting. An optional five-day field trip introduces students to places of scenic, historical and cultural interest.

Japanese Study Abroad Program in Kobe

Dates:

March 23 - June 2, 2006

Location:

Kobe, Japan

Cost:

OSU undergraduate tuition plus a program fee of $2,800 (est.)

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors who have had at least two and a half years (or the equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction before the program commences.

The Japanese Study Abroad Program is a ten-week intermediate/advanced language and culture program offered at the Shoin Daigaku Kaikan (Japan Study Center) in Kobe, Japan during Spring Quarter 2006. This program is offered as a collaborative effort between the OSU Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures and Kobe Shoin Women's University in Kobe Japan.

Jiangnan (Yangzi River Delta) Cities in Late Imperial and Republican China: History and Culture of the Shanghai Region

Dates:

Summer Quarter--3 weeks

Eastern China: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and others

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program Fee of $1,150

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduate and graduate students with a strong interest in the history and culture of China. Currently enrolled students of all majors with a cumulative 2.7 GPA who have completed at least two full-time quarters of enrollment at OSU at the time of the application are eligible to apply. Students applying must have completed at least one course in Chinese studies and/or demonstrate an acceptable prerequisite to the Resident Director. Selection interviews are required.

Jiangnan (Yangzi River Delta) Cities in Late Imperial and Republican China is a new, intensive three-week program that introduces students to Late Imperial and Republican Chinese history and culture, focusing on the cities along the Yangzi River Delta in Eastern China. The program provides a unique opportunity for a group of 10-15 students to immerse themselves in the urban life, history and culture of the Jiangnan region while also earning credit for OSU courses in Chinese history. A typical day of the program will combine readings and discussions with guided visits to historical sites and landmarks. Students in ALL majors are welcome to apply. The diversity of students from various disciplines is an important part of the appeal of this program. All course-related readings and instruction will be in English or in English translation.

Nanzan University

Dates:

Academic year beginning of September to middle of May

Nagoya, Japan

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program fee of $300 per quarter.   Students pay travel and living expenses (est. $1,300 per month).

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduates of junior standing, with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, who have completed at least two years of college-level Japanese

This is an international exchange program based on an agreement between the Ohio State University and Nanzan University in Japan.   One exchange student is selected each year to participate in this program.   Students may register for any course offered by the Center for Japanese Studies.   Students take Japanese language classes according to their level.   They can also attend courses in Japanese and Asian culture, politics, economy, society, religions, literature and history, which are conducted in English. Students will take language courses in the morning and Japanese area studies, seminars and art courses in the afternoon.

University of Tsukuba

Dates:

Japanese academic year (middle April to March), or U.S. academic year (end of August to end of July)

Tsukuba, Japan

Cost:

OSU tuition plus a Study Abroad Program fee of $300 per quarter.   Students pay travel and living expenses (est. $1,300 per month).

Eligibility:

Open to OSU undergraduate students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have had at least 150 hours (two years) of college-level Japanese.

This international exchange program is based on an agreement between The Ohio State University and the University of Tsukuba in Japan. One or two exchange students are selected each year to participate in this program. Students may register for any course offered.
