2006-2007

Justin Tighe
The author of Constructing Suiyuan: The Politics of Northwestern Territory and Development in Early Twentieth-Century China (Brill, 2005), Dr. Tighe will conduct research on late Qing/Republican constructions of Inner Asia and their significance in the making of empire and nation state respectively. He will teach three courses, "Regionalizing China," "Taiwan: Transformation & Identity," and "China and Inner Asia."

2007-2008

Kwang-Kyoon Yeo
An urban anthropologist trained both in Chinese and Korean studies, Yeo did his Ph.D. training at Columbia University. His interests include ethnicity, social stratification and transnational migration in East Asia. Yeo's research is the study of the formation of "Koreatown" in Beijing; while at OSU he will incorporate new literature on Korean communities in Osaka, Japan and Los Angeles. He will teach three courses, "Globalization in Contemporary East Asia: Cultural Perspectives," "Outsiders in Urban China: Ethnicity, Class and Citizenship" and "Contemporary Korean Society: Historical, Political and Cultural Perspectives."

Call for Applications for Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Researcher Position

Pending funding, the East Asian Studies Center (EASC) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position for the 2008-09 academic year. The position will cover a 10-month period beginning September 1, 2008. The stipend for 2008-09 is $40,000 plus benefits. This year’s focus will be on interdisciplinary approaches to research and teaching about the environment in East Asia from comparative political, economic, sociological, communication or historical perspectives. We are particularly interested in candidates who have research expertise in environmental issues involving China. Additional background in a relevant natural science or environmental science is a plus.

REQUIREMENTS: The EASC postdoctoral researcher will devote part of their time to research and writing and part to teaching. S/he is required to be in residence in the Columbus, OH area for the duration of the position. During the residency, s/he will develop and teach 2 undergraduate and 1 advanced undergraduate/graduate seminar. As part of her research/teaching profile, s/he will be instrumental in facilitating the academic component of an international lecture series aimed at the East Asian and environmental studies communities at OSU and beyond.

ELIGIBILITY: The researcher must have completed all Ph.D. requirements prior to Sept 1, 2008.

RESEARCH/TEACHING FOCUS:

This year’s focus will be on environmental issues in modern and contemporary East Asia. We welcome a broad array of lines of inquiry including, but not limited to the political, economic, and sociological ramifications of energy use, alternative energy generation, water, air and soil management, food security, and climate change. We are particularly interested in candidates who are engaged with questions of historical patterns of life that lead to sustainability, have fieldwork experience in Asia, have professional competence in one or more East Asian languages, and can incorporate interdisciplinary approaches in their research and teaching.

Two of the courses will be taught in collaboration with the thriving Undergraduate International Studies Program, which offers majors in World Economy and Business, International Relations & Diplomacy, Security & Intelligence, Development Studies as well as in East Asian Studies. A third course can be offered in any appropriate department or an interdisciplinary program such as the Environmental Studies Graduate Program. Courses can be designed as intermediate undergraduate (300 to 500 level) and/or as advanced undergraduate/graduate (600 level) courses. The candidate will have flexibility to offer courses in the autumn, winter, or spring quarters.

  • Research proposal (not to exceed 1,500 words total)
  • Teaching proposal for three courses (not to exceed 1,500 words total for all three courses). Sample syllabi are desirable. Preferably offered without prerequisites, the proposed courses should emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to the topics and issues involved.
  • 3 letters of reference (it is desirable that at least one of the letters addresses undergraduate teaching experience, including English language ability)

The deadline for the receipt of completed applications is February 29, 2008 with preliminary interviews taking place at the Association of Asian Studies Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia (April 3-6, 2008).
